IEC Code Fees in India: A Comprehensive Guide 2024

5 min readFeb 25, 2025

Costs associated with IEC Code registration in India — government fees on DGFT portal, professional charges, required documents, processing timelines and common mistakes to avoid.

What is an IEC Code and Why Do You Need It?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The IEC is the foundational document for any business or individual intending to engage in import or export of goods or services from India. Every Bill of Entry filed for import and every Shipping Bill filed for export must carry the valid IEC of the importer or exporter respectively — without it, customs clearance is not possible.

Unlike many regulatory registrations in India, the IEC is a lifetime registration — once issued, it does not expire (though annual updation is now mandatory). It covers all products (other than SCOMET goods which require a separate licence) and all modes of transport. A single IEC covers all of a business's import and export activities across all customs stations, shipping lines, and trade lanes. The IEC is linked to the entity's PAN (Permanent Account Number) and can be amended as the business grows.

The IEC serves as the primary business identifier in India's trade regulatory system. It is referenced in DGFT scheme applications (EPCG, Advance Authorization, RoDTEP), bank account designation for foreign exchange receipts (mandatory for FEMA compliance), and RCMC applications with Export Promotion Councils. Any business serious about international trade — whether exporting handicrafts, importing machinery, or providing export services — must have a valid, correctly maintained IEC.

IEC Registration Fees, Documents & Process

The government fee for IEC registration on the DGFT portal is ₹500 (five hundred rupees only), paid online through the portal's integrated payment gateway (net banking, UPI, debit/credit card). This government fee is the only mandatory payment — there are no other government charges for IEC issuance. Professional/consulting fees charged by DGFT consultants like ISLF for managing the application are separate from the government fee and vary based on the complexity of the entity structure and the consultant's expertise.

The documents required for IEC registration differ by entity type. For a sole proprietorship: PAN card of the proprietor, Aadhaar card of the proprietor (for e-KYC), and a cancelled cheque or bank certificate (bank name, account number, IFSC). For a partnership firm: PAN card of the firm, partnership deed, and bank certificate. For a private/public limited company: PAN card of the company, Certificate of Incorporation, and bank certificate. For all entity types, the application is made using the DGFT portal's e-IEC module with digital authentication via net banking or digital signature.

The IEC is typically issued instantly (within seconds) upon successful submission of the online application if all details match and the Aadhaar e-KYC succeeds. In cases where manual verification is required (typically for company or trust registrations, or where PAN details do not match), the processing time is 3-5 working days. ISLF manages the IEC application process end-to-end, reducing the chance of rejection due to data entry errors, documentation mismatches, or portal navigation issues.

IEC Modification, Annual Updation & Common Mistakes

Once issued, the IEC must be kept current. IEC modification (amendment) is required when business details change: addition of new branches (each branch can be listed under the main IEC), change of company name (after Company Act filing), change of registered office address, change of bank account details, addition of authorized signatory, and HSN code additions. IEC modification on the DGFT portal carries no government fee. ISLF manages IEC modifications for all its clients, ensuring that the IEC profile accurately reflects the current business structure.

Annual IEC updation was introduced by DGFT in 2021 as a mandatory compliance measure. Between April 1 and June 30 each financial year, every IEC holder must log onto the DGFT portal and confirm or update their IEC details. Failure to complete annual updation results in the IEC being de-activated — making it unusable for customs filing until reactivated. ISLF tracks annual updation compliance for all its IEC clients and completes the filing on time to avoid any disruption to trade operations.

Common IEC application mistakes that ISLF helps clients avoid include: entering the applicant PAN incorrectly (causing a mismatch with PAN database records and triggering rejection), providing a bank account that is not yet operational (causing payment reconciliation issues), failing to use the correct entity type in the application, not completing the Aadhaar e-KYC step for proprietorship applications, and entering the wrong MSME/Udyam registration number. ISLF's pre-submission checklist catches these errors before the application is filed, ensuring a smooth and quick IEC issuance.
